Dumbing Down the Faith

What are we doing to our children and the faith we are handing down to them when we do such things as "simplify" the Commandments given by God in His holy Word? Explaining them is one thing. But rewording the actual commandment as is suggested by one Lutheran pastor who has "borrowed" an idea of simplifying the 10 commandments? Example: 1st Commandment - "God is #1!"

And number last. And everything in between.

I really don't understand why anyone, least of all a Lutheran pastor, would feel the need to mess around with what we have been given in Scripture like this. Isn't "You shall have no other gods" simple enough?
